The Independent Mind – John Adams’ Legacy

As our America 250 Legacy Series charges toward the 2026 milestone, we look to the ‘Colossus of Independence’ himself: John Adams.

Adams was not a man of compromise. He didn’t follow the crowd; he followed his deeply held principles. Long before 1776, he famously defended the British soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre, not because it was popular, but because he believed absolute fairness was the bedrock of a free society. He understood that personal integrity means making the right choice, not the easy choice. He gave us a Legacy of Independent Thought.

The Lesson for Today: Your values aren’t up for a vote. A truly “Adamesque” legacy requires a plan that ensures your personal principles are not eroded by family pressure, changing winds, or popularity beyond 2026.

If you don’t exercise your right to build a private, independent plan, you default to a public process (Probate) where your personal intent is often secondary to bureaucratic procedures:

The Independent Voice: Adams acted with conviction. Have you appointed an Independent Trustee or Personal Representative who is legally bound to follow your specific instructions, regardless of outside influence?

The Principle-Based Trust: Do your Trust documents clearly define why you made certain decisions? Like Adams, define the principles behind the payments to ensure your grandchildren understand the values you prioritized.

A Sovereign Retirement: Your retirement shouldn’t be subject to “popular vote.” A structured Private Annuity or Personal Sovereignty Fund ensures your financial independence is protected first.

John Adams taught us that freedom requires the courage to stand alone for what is right. Your family’s future deserves that same level of principled protection. Don’t leave your intentions to chance. Author your declaration of financial independence.

The Friday Tag: Have you activated the independent defense of your private intentions? Join us next Friday as we celebrate America’s Semiquincentennial day. Let’s make your choice absolute!
