As we continue our America 250 Legacy Series counting down to 2026, we look to the man who preserved the Union: Abraham Lincoln.
Lincoln was a brilliant self-taught lawyer who spent his career drafting documents for others. He understood the law better than almost anyone of his era. Yet, in one of history’s most ironic twists, the “Great Emancipator” died intestate—meaning he passed away without a will.
Despite his legal expertise, Lincoln never got around to formalizing his own final wishes. Because of this, his estate had to be settled by the courts, a process that took years and added unnecessary stress to his grieving family during an already national tragedy.
The Lesson for Today: Procrastination is the enemy of legacy. We often think, “I’ll get to it when things settle down,” or “I have plenty of time.” But as Lincoln’s story shows, even the most brilliant minds can leave their families in a difficult position by leaving their work “unfinished.”
An estate plan is the final gift of clarity you give to those you love. It ensures that the “government’s plan” doesn’t replace your plan.
Don’t leave your family’s future to the courts. Finish the work today so they can find peace tomorrow.
Join us next Friday as we continue to draw wisdom from the giants of history to secure your family’s 2026 and beyond.
